Setting WordPress Site to Maintenance Mode

1) Install the free plugin WP Maintenance Mode

a. use CPANEL to install the software:
Find the Wordpress software you wish to install on the Internet
    e.g. "WP Maintenance Mode"
Download the software to your computer
Log in to your CPANEL account
Go to the File Manager in CPANEL
Find your wp-content folder
    click on the plugins folder
    click the Upload button on top menu
    choose the new software to upload from your computer
    click the "go back to" link at bottom
    highlight the zip file you just uploaded
    click on Extract on the top menu (all the way to the right)
            OR just right click the zip file and choose "Extract"
Login to your Wordpress admin page
You should see the installed plugin when you click the Plugins
    on the left side menu
You might not see the plugin right away
        log out and back in
        reload the page

b. Install from within Wordpress:
- If your plugins menu in WordPress admin area allows you to "Add New", do the following steps to install this new plugin  
    Login to your Wordpress admin page at yourdomain/wp-admin/
    forgot your password?
  enter your email address and check "forgot password"
   follow instructions in the email sent from Wordpress
   After you have logged into your WordPress admin page, hover over “Plugins” and click “Add New“.
    Using the search feature, search for "WP Maintenance" plugin by keyword, author, or tag.

    Click "Install Now"
    After the plugin has been installed, click “Activate” to begin using it.}

2) Adjust the settings in mainenance mode:
Click on Wordpress left menu
    WP Maintenance Mode
On Status click Activated radio button
Click on Save Settings button at bottom
Click the Design Tab
In Heading change to "We'll be back soon"
In Text change description to
    Sorry for the inconvenience.
    Our website is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance.
    Thank-you for your understanding.
In Background
    Choose type
        you can set a custom color or image
Click the Modules tab
    (Optional) show countdown to yes
    (Optional) show subscribe to yes
    (Optional) show social networks to yes
    type your Facebook address, email etc. as desired
Log out of the site to view it
When changes are done log back in
Click Dashboard on left menu
You should see a message at top that
  "The Maintenance Mode is active. Please don't forget to deactivate as soon as you are done"
  Click on the "deactivate" link within this message
In the General tab, set Status radio button to Deactivated
Click Save Settings button at bottom
